چکیده

In some cases, a corrosion system may be exposed to radiation field. Most usually, it occurs as a part of atmospheric corrosion, when materials are, besides other factors, exposed also to visible and ultraviolet radiation. Technical significance of corrosion caused by such types of radiation is rather small. On the other hand, metallic materials may be exposed to high energy ionizing radiation (IR), emitted e.g. during operation of nuclear reactors, or during storage/processing of irradiated nuclear fuel. Contrary to nonionizing radiation, IR significantly affects properties of corrosion system and reactions which proceed inside the system. Therefore, three main areas of research of radiation induced corrosion exist:

Nuclear fuel in a reactor accident.

Nuclear accidents that lead to melting of a reactor core create heterogeneous materials containing hundreds of radionuclides, many with short half-lives. The long-lived fission products and transuranium elements within damaged fuel remain a concern for millennia. Currently, accurate fundamental models for the prediction of release rates of radionuclides from fuel, especially in contact with wat...

Gamma radiation induces hydrogen absorption by copper in water.

One of the most intricate issues of nuclear power is the long-term safety of repositories for radioactive waste. These repositories can have an impact on future generations for a period of time orders of magnitude longer than any known civilization. Several countries have considered copper as an outer corrosion barrier for canisters containing spent nuclear fuel. Among the many processes that m...

Roles of Radiolytic and Externally Generated H2 in the Corrosion of Fractured Spent Nuclear Fuel.

A 2-D model for the corrosion of spent nuclear fuel inside a failed nuclear waste container has been modified to determine the influence of various redox processes occurring within fractures in the fuel. The corrosion process is driven by reaction of the fuel with the dominant α radiolysis product, H2O2. A number of reactions are shown to moderate or suppress the corrosion rate, including H2O2 ...

Effect of Silicon Content on the Corrosion Resistance and Radiation-Induced Embrittlement of Materials for Advanced Heavy Liquid Metal Nuclear Systems

The purpose of this collaborative research project involving the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV), Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) and Idaho State University (ISU) is to evaluate the effect of silicon (Si) content on the corrosion behavior and radiation-induced embrittlement of martensitic stainless steels having chemical compositions similar to that of the modified 9Cr-1Mo
